Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer handed in his resignation Friday to President Vaclav Klaus, but was asked to stay in a caretaker role until a new government is formed following the elections in May, Reuters reported.
The resignation opens the possibility for Klaus to appoint a new prime minister, presumed to be right-wing Civic Democrat Petr Necas.
Fischer's caretaker government came to power in May 2009 after the previous center-right coalition collapsed during the economic crisis.
