Deal signed for Ashdod desalination plant

A subsidiary of state-owned national water company Mekorot signed a financing agreement Tuesday to build and operate a desalination plant in Ashdod for 25 years.
The plant will supply 100 million cubic meters of water annually from the end of 2013, or around 15 percent of total household water consumption, the Finance Ministry said in a statement.
It is expected that Israel’s five desalination plants will together supply 85% of household water needs. The agreement was signed in the presence of Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz and National Infrastructures Minister Uzi Landau.
