Deputy foreign minister meets with Hungarian counterpart

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon met with his Hungarian counterpart Zsolt Nemeth in Budapest on Tuesday, in part of his recent European campaign to rally support against the Palestinian United Nations statehood recognition bid. Ayalon will visit Spain and Portugal in the coming days.
Speaking at a press conference, Ayalon urged European nations as "great supporters of the Palestinian Authority to show leadership and guide the Palestinians back to the negotiating table and avoid other ploys to bypass negotiations."
The deputy foreign minister urged Europeans to take a "strong public stance" against the UN state bid, scheduled for September 20, in order to press the Palestinian leadership to avoid taking unilateral steps towards statehood.
Ayalon praised Hungary for maintaining good relations with Israel, taking an active role in fighting anti-Semitism, and encouraged the government in Budapest to continue to act strongly against extremest elements in Hungary.
