Dutch envoys briefly kidnapped in Lebanon, taken to Syria

BEIRUT - Armed men briefly kidnapped two Dutch diplomats in Lebanon's eastern Bekaa Valley last month and handed them over to Syrian authorities who later freed them, a Dutch embassy official in Beirut said on Thursday.
Deputy head of mission Hans Peter van der Woude told Reuters the diplomats were in a car with diplomatic license plates when they were stopped by armed men in another car.
"Two diplomats were stopped on May 24 on the public road north of Baalbek by local armed people. They were transferred to the Syrian authorities just inside Syria and the Syrians brought them back to Lebanon," he said.
