Dutch prime minister urges Netanyahu to freeze settlements

THE HAGUE - Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte urged Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to freeze construction in territories beyond the pre-1967 borders, saying the Dutch government “finds a freeze would be extremely beneficial.”

Rutte’s comments came at the end of his hour-long meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Dutch prime minister’s residence in The Hague. A freeze “would help to get discussions going,” Rutte said at a press conference in The Hague attended by Dutch and Israeli journalists.

Rutte, whose government is seen as one of the most pro-Israel in the European Union, also announced that the Israeli and Dutch cabinets will hold joint meetings as of June. Rutte described this as “a step forward in furthering the relations between the two countries” and said Holland was "interested in investing in its relationship with Israel."
