Egypt freezes assets of former Mubarak-era PM Shafiq

Egypt's Illicit Gains Authority on Sunday froze the assets of former Mubarak-era Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq due to alleged "inexplicable" increases in his wealth, Egypt's Al Ahram reported.
Egyptian Justice Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Roshdy Salam said the decision was based on an ongoing corruption investigation into Shafiq's business dealings.
Al Ahram quoted Shafiq as saying that Egyptian authorities can expect "an aggressive reaction" to what he called attempts "to hinder my political career."
Shafiq, who also was put on Egypt's arrivals watchlist, is currently in the United Arab Emirates and plans to remain there for "security reasons."
Shaifq lost to Mohamed Morsi in the final round of Egypt's presidential election earlier this year.
