Egypt: Judge orders election halt in Alexandria

CAIRO — An Egyptian administrative court has ordered elections halted in the country's second largest city citing the disqualification of numerous candidates, mostly from the opposition.

The ruling National Democratic Party has already appealed the decision and it is not clear if the government will implement the halt before the Nov. 28 parliamentary elections.

Judge Adel Azab said elections should be stopped in 10 of 11 districts of Alexandria because several court orders overturning the disqualification of candidates have not been implemented.

The Mediterranean port is a stronghold of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood and has already been wracked with clashes between them and supporters ruling party supporters.
