Egypt not looking to obtain nuclear arms, FM says

Egypt does not wish to obtain nuclear arms and is interested in making the Middle East a nuclear weapons-free zone, Reuters quoted Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit as saying on Saturday.
Aboul Gheit was clarifying the Egyptian position after a 2008 US diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks reported that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak said he might look to develop nuclear weapons in the event that such weapons were acquired by Iran.
"Egypt does not seek to get nuclear arms because they would not be used and because their costs are huge. But we seek to rid the region of nuclear arms," Aboul Gheit told reporters at a ruling party event in Cairo.
