Egyptian imam extends hand to Eastern Christian communities

The Imam of a highly influential mosque in Egypt said he was ready to host the General Congress of Eastern Churches as an expression of peace between Christians and Muslims, UPI in Arabic reported Sunday.
Imam Ahmed Mohamed al-Tayib made the announcement during a meeting with former Lebanese president Amin Gemayel, reportedly saying that hosting the conference at Al-Azhar Mosque would express the "peaceful co-existence between Christians and Muslims in Muslim nations for the past 14 centuries."
The imam's announcement comes after a tense week with Egypt's Coptic Christian population after 25 protesters were killed during a protest that led to clashes with the army.
