Egyptians prepare for food, vegetable shortages in Cairo

As protests in Cairo and Egyptian cities rage into their sixth day, locals have begun stockpiling food - bread and vegetables - in preparations for what could become a food shortage, Arabic-language news daily Al-Arabiya reported. Food imports have been almost completely suspended.
Already, the available brown, whole flour used for common pita bread has become lacking. Bakers have resorted to producing mostly baguettes - made from white flour - a more expensive bread not affordable by many in Egypt. 70 percent of Egyptians live on subsidized bread.
