Eini threatens general strike if wage agreements are broken

Histadrut Chairman Ofer Eini said Thursday that he is prepared to declare a general strike if the Treasury reopens an existing wage agreement as part of its program of expenditure cuts.
Eini was responding to media reports that Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz will ask him to postpone public sector wage increases that were promised under a 2010 collective agreement. Salaries are supposed to rise by 2.25 percent in January 2013 and a further 1% in July 2013.
The labor union chief emphasized that he intends to negotiate a new deal with the Treasury next year, given that the 2010 agreement will expire following the final wage increase in July.
