Eitan: 'Lapid Law is anti-democratic, reeks of cowardice'

Minister of Improvement of Government Services Michael Eitan strongly opposed the "Lapid Law" at Sunday morning's meeting of the Ministerial Committee for Legislation, calling it anti-democratic.

"This law does not allow the public to choose candidates as it wishes," Eitan said. "This is a shady, inappropriate law that reeks of cowardice and an inability to fairly deal with public opinion. Personal legislation is fundamentally invalid and it has been proven in the past that attempts such as these are not only anti-democratic, but are also stupid and pointless."

The "Lapid Law," named after Channel 2 anchor Yair Lapid, who is rumored to be eyeing a Knesset seat, calls for a "cooling off" period of six months between a journalism career and a political career. At least eight of the current Knesset members worked in television or newspapers.
