Electrician pulls plug on 9 embryos at Assuta

An independent electrician conducting tests at Tel Aviv’s private Assuta Hospital accidentally turned off the power to the in-vitro fertilization lab for a few minutes, the hospital reported on Tuesday. One of the lab devices that stores frozen embryos broke down but was “repaired quickly.”

Because the power cut may have affected the frozen embryos stored there for nine couples who want to use them to conceive, the hospital offered at no cost an additional IVF cycle – which involves taking hormones and having ripe ova removed and fertilized by sperm – rather than using the embryos stored there, the hospital spokeswoman said.

The incident was “examined in depth” and the staff were briefed on correct procedures so that no such accident recurs. The Health Ministry received a report of the incident, the hospital said.
