Electricity demand approaches production capacity

The demand for electricity was approaching production capacity Wednesday afternoon and the Israel Electric Corporation has asked that customers reduce power consumption immediately. If power outages occur, they will do so locally between the hours and 2 and 4 p.m.
At peak usage hours, the demand for electricity is expected to reach 11,850 megawatts, while the production capacity is only around 11,900 megawatts – leaving a reserve of 50 megawatts only, the IEC said.
Given the fact that demand for electricity rose considerably today and is now close to production capacity, in order to stabilize the system and prevent widespread blackouts, the IEC  may need to perform intermittent breaks in power lines throughout the country, the company added.
