Erdan: Gas stations must filter vapors

Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan ordered Sunday all gas stations to install vapor filters within the next five years. Gas stations within 80 meters of residential areas or other sensitive sites must install such systems within three years.
Gasoline vapors pollute the air and can cause serious illness in people. For example, benzene mixed with the air causes ozone which is carcinogenic. Gas stations are already required to have vapor treatment systems installed on their gas containers. The new regulations apply to vapors from motorists filling up.
Gas stations must file a plan with a precise schedule of installation by July 1.
