EU appoints new envoy to the Mideast peace process

The European Union appointed a new special representative to the Middle East peace process on Monday. Andreas Reinicke, who is currently the German ambassador to Syria, will assume his new post on February 1.
Speaking in Brussels on Monday, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton praised Reinicke's appointment, saying it highlights the European Union's commitment to the peace process. She added that the German diplomat "will play a key role in our efforts to bring the parties back to the negotiating table."
