EU says need to keep pressure on Syria's government

MOSCOW - The world should keep pressure on Syria's government in order to stop violence, the European Union's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said at a news conference in Moscow on Thursday after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
"The future of Syria now depends on the ability of all of us to keep pressure on them to see that there is a need to stop this violence, to listen to the people, and to find a way to move forward," Ashton said.
"I do hope that we will have significant movement in this direction in the coming days," she added. Speaking after talks with Ashton, Lavrov reiterated Russia's opposition to calls for Syria's President Bashar Assad to step down.
