EU sees no barrier to Bulgaria, Romania in Schengen

COPENHAGEN - European Union president nation Denmark said on Thursday that Romania and Bulgaria should be allowed to join the passport-free Schengen zone, despite concern that corruption in the two countries entailed risks.
"There are no obstacles to Romania and Bulgaria joining the Schengen system," Danish Justice Minister Morten Bodskov told a news conference at a meeting of EU justice and police ministers.Romania and Bulgaria are seeking to join the 25-member Schengen zone but the Netherlands has objected, saying the two east European countries must first make progress on combating corruption.
Bodskov said Denmark would try to deal with the matter during its six-month presidency of the EU, which ends in June. All EU states must agree to admit any new countries to the zone.
