Explosion of old bomb kills 1, wounds 2 in Beirut

BEIRUT  — A Lebanese security official on Saturday said one person waskilled and two others were wounded after a bomb exploded in a landfillnear an exhibition center in downtown Beirut.

The bomb was likely left over from the country's 1975-90 civil war, the official said. Saturday's explosion killed a Syrian worker namedMohammed al-Wardi and wounded two others, who were taken to a nearbyhospital, the official added.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the information.

Army troops rushed to the scene of the explosion and authorities were investigating the incident.
