DIYARBAKIR, Turkey - Kurdish militants launched an attack on Turkish security forces near the Iraqi border in southeast Turkey early on Thursday, triggering clashes in which one soldier and four Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) fighters were killed, security sources said.
The PKK millitants attacked some 10 different places at 2:30 a.m. at Cukurca in Hakkari province, the sources said.
They said seven people were also wounded in the clashes. Military operations were continuing in the area.
More than 40,000 militants, soldiers and civilians have been killed since the PKK began its fight for self-rule in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast in 1984.
Turkey, the United States and the European Union all classify the PKK as a terrorist organisation.
