FM: Israel still won't apologize to Turkey

Israel is ready to move forward in its relations with Turkey and resolve any outstanding disputes, but refuses to apologize for the deaths of a number of Turks killed in May 2010 aboard the Mavi Marmara ship while being taken over by Israeli commandos, the Turkish paper Hurriyet reported that Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman said on Monday.

The ship was part of a flotilla trying to brake Israel's Gaza blockade. There were no similar problems with the taking over of the other ships in the flotilla.

“As Israel, we are ready to discuss [our problems with Turkey] in high-level or low-level open meetings,” Liberman said during a July 22 interview with a group of journalists from Turkey. “We’re really ready to discuss not only this issue [Mavi Marmara] but also the Iranian problem, the Gaza Strip [issue] or the support for [Gaza’s ruler] Hamas. But [we’re not ready] to discuss in what way we will protect our citizens,” the minister said."

The meeting was the foreign minister's first with Turkish media since the 2010 attack, the minister’s spokesperson said.
