Former minister Avraham-Balila drops out of Knesset race

Kadima MK and former tourism minister Ruhama Avraham-Balila announced on Tuesday that she was leaving politics.

Avraham-Balila, a close ally of Kadima chairman Shaul Mofaz, told the party leader on Monday night that she would not run for the 19th Knesset because she felt she was unable to reach her full potential while serving as an MK.

“This was a challenging and fascinating time in my life, in which I met many good people, but I need to feel sure of what I am doing,” Avraham-Balila told Army Radio.

The Kadima MK denied that she was leaving politics because she was not confident she would get into the next Knesset, saying she wanted to use her talents elsewhere.

Avraham-Balila, 48, began her career in politics as an assistant to then-Likud director-general Avigdor Liberman, and served as secretary and bureau chief for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu from 1994-1999.

She became a Likud MK in 2003, moved to Kadima in 2005 and was tourism minister from 2008-2009.
