French government seeks to boost national identity

PARIS — France's prime minister said the government will ensure that newly arrived immigrants receive training on gender equality and the French language as part of efforts to better integrate them into society.
That measure and others come as the government ponders how to cultivate pride in being French and better integrate immigrants. The measures stem from three months of sometimes noisy and occasionally racist debate on what it means to be French.
French Prime Minister Francois Fillon also said new citizens will be obliged to sign a pact listing their duties to France. He did not provide details Monday in a speech outlining the government's plans.
Fillon also said the government-sponsored debate is to continue and that further measures will be announced.
