German foreign minister travels to Iran, meets Ahmadinejad

BERLIN  — Germany's government confirmed on Sunday that the Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle held a rare meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran during the release of two German journalists.
Westerwelle discussed "human and civil rights" with the president late Saturday, the government said. It was first visit by a German foreign minister to Iran since before Ahmadinejad took power in 2005.
The two journalists, who had been detained since October in connection with a highly publicized stoning case, were released Saturday and Westerwelle took them home on his government plane.
