Germany: No more troops to Afghanistan for now

Germany No more troops

Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday that Germany is not ready to send more troops to Afghanistan. Merkel told reporters that Germany would await the results of an international conference on Afghanistan next month in London before deciding whether to commit more forces. About 4,000 German soldiers are deployed in Afghanistan as part of the NATO-led force. The German parliament plans to extend their mandate later this week without allowing for any additional troops. President Barack Obama is expected to outline a new US war plan that will include between 30,000 and 35,000 more American troops. Obama called Merkel before his planned speech Tuesday night at the US Military Academy at West Point, New York, her spokesman, Ulrich Wilhelm said.
