Gov't, water utility Mekorot sign deal for Ashdod plant

Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz and National Infrastructure Minister Uzi Landau signed an agreement Monday with water utility Mekorot chairman Alex Vijneitzer for the establishment of a desalinization plant in Ashdod under the authority of the Mekorot daughter company Mekorot Development & Enterprise.
According to plans for the plant, the facility is expected to produce 100 million cubic meters of water a year at a rate of NIS 2.4 per cubic meter.
That level of production, according to the agreement, is expected to begin from 2013, and will constitute approximately 15% of total domestic water consumption.
The desalinization plant, using a process of osmosis in order purify sea water, is the fifth such facility in Israel.
