Group rebukes Lithuania tabloid for 'anti-Semitic' headline

A Jewish group rebuked a Lithuanian newspaper on Wednesday for running an article it deemed blatantly anti-Semitic.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) said the singling out of the Jewish community on the front page of the Lithuanian tabloid Vakaro Zinio, whose headline read “the Jews”  and was accompanied by a photo of a local Chabad rabbi, smacked of racism.
The story was about several institutions in Lithuania which are allegedly avoiding paying taxes, which included the local Chabad house as well as Western Union.  Yet the headline gave the ”mistaken impression that it is the Jews who are robbing the Lithuanian people.”
“This type of blatant anti-Semitic lie is particularly reprehensible and dangerous in financially-beleaguered Lithuania and what is even more shocking is that this anti-Semitic incitement, which threatens the entire Lithuanian Jewish community, has not elicited a single negative reaction from any government official, religious leader or foreign ambassador,” said SWC’s Efraim Zuroff.
