Haifa U to give honorary doctorate to Justice Salim Joubran

Haifa University is to award Supreme Court Justice Salim Joubran an honorary doctorate in recognition of his many years in the legal arena and for his work to create closer ties between Jews and Arabs, the university announced on Monday.
Haifa University President Aharon Ben-Zeev said Joubran had "given a place for social issues in his rulings" as well as protecting vulnerable groups in Israeli society.Joubran has given rise to some controversy, particularly among politicians on the right. Most recently at Supreme Court President (Emeritus) Dorit Beinisch's retirement ceremony, Joubran drew criticism for refusing to sing the Israeli national anthem, Hatikva, which led his colleague Justice Elyakim Rubinstein to speak out in his support, dubbing the Arab-Israeli justice a "loyal citizen of the State of Israel who represents his country abroad with dignity and success."
