Hamas, Jihad to boycott PA municipal elections in W. Bank

Hamas officials said on Monday that the Islamist movement will boycott the municipal elections that the Palestinian Authority is planning to hold in the West Bank in July.
They said that the elections were being held under the supervision of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad's "unconstitutional government which, they added, has dissolved many of the elected municipal councils and replaced them with appointed ones.
Islamic Jihad announced they would boycott the elections as well.
Fatah responded by saying Hamas was trying to create the illusion the elections would be uncontested to make voters stay away from polling stations, while they in fact intended to run their candidates as independents, Israel Radio reported.
