Haredi Lithuanian community heads back cult leader Chen

Leaders of the haredi Lithuanian community have expressed their support for cult leader Elior Chen, who has been charged with ordering his followers to beat and abuse eight siblings whose mother belonged to his sect.

In a letter published Friday, the leading rabbis said, “We seek to arouse God’s mercy in setting up a captive-redeeming fund for the rabbi, who has occupied himself with Torah all his life.”

They also urged the public to collect donations for Chen and his family, who they say are suffering financial problems, so that he can prove his innocence.

Among the signatories on the letter are prominent rabbis Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, Aharon Leib Steinman and Chaim Kanievsky.
