Eli Cohen, a senior Jewish Agency for Israel official who had been with the organization for decades, tendered his resignation on Monday, a spokesperson announced.
“I hereby announce that the director general of the aliya and absorption department informed the board today that he is stepping down from his position,” a press release issued by JAFI Director General Alan Hoffman said.
Cohen has been the head of the aliya and absorption department at JAFI in recent years. In that position he had been closely involved with bringing the Falashmura to Israel and facilitating immigration of Jews from the Former Soviet Union and Western countries.
Sources at JAFI said that while disagreements between Cohen and the new leadership under Chairman Nathan Sharansky exist over the Jewish education oriented direction that it has taken, his departure was on amicable terms.
