Hebrew U. Professors to march in Sheikh Jarrah

Under the banner "The Occupation is Here...Three Minutes From Mt. Scopus," dozens of Hebrew University professors together with their students will march from the university's campus to Sheikh Jarrah on Wednesday, in protest of the eviction of Palestinian families from their homes in the east Jerusalem neighborhood.
At the conclusion of the march, Israel Prize recipient Prof. Ze'ev Sternhell and Prof. Moshe Halbertal, who assisted in drawing up the IDF's code of ethics, will give brief lectures on democracy and basic human rights.
Weekly protests in the neighborhood against the eviction of  Palestinians from their Sheikh Jarrah homes have grown steadily since two families - the Gawis and Hanouns - were evicted from their homes in August 2009 by a court order.
Jewish claimants to the homes have maintained that the properties in question belonged to Jewish owners before 1948, while Palestinian residents of the neighborhood, many of whom were refugees from the War of Independence and resettled in the neighborhood in 1956, claim that they are the rightful owners and have continued to fight against the evictions in court.
