Henin bill would forbid natural gas exports

MK Dov Henin (Hadash) launched a bill on Tuesday, written by Adam Teva V'Din (Israel Union for Environmental Defense), that would prohibit all exports of natural gas unless the government can ensure 50 years worth of sufficient quantities for use within Israel.
"Trade of gas without ensuring the welfare of our children will mean abandoning their health and will contradict the role of the state in maintaining its natural resources," Adam Teva V'Din executive director Amit Bracha said.
If passed, the bill would make sure that Israel has ample natural gas supplies for electricity, industrial and transportation purposes for the next generation, and only after the government determines that these requirements will be satisfied would exports be permitted.
"Already today the gas tycoons are guaranteed huge profits, and we cannot allow them to additional profits from exports as long as the needs of the Israeli market are not secured," Henin said.
