Herzog to Yishai: 'You do not have a monopoly on Judaism'

Minister of Welfare Yitzhak Herzog responded to criticism over his abstaining in Sunday's vote over the status of illegal immigrants' children in a press conference on Wednesday.
"Israel is not different from other democracies that deal with foreign workers, and find solutions other than deportation for it," Herzog said. "I want to say to the minister of interior: You do not have a monopoly on the Israelis' collective understanding of Judaism."
"The decision I made on Sunday was a fair one at that time," Herzog said. However, in retrospect, he said that he thinks "I should have supported what was proposed. I am aware that my abstention brought criticism, and I understand it," the minister added.
