Histadrut calls general strike to begin next week

The Histadrut Labor federation announced Thursday that a general strike would begin Monday, shutting down airports, ports, local authorities and government offices. The announcement came after negotiations with the Finance Ministry on the employment conditions of contract workers broke down.

Histadrut chairman Ofer Eini was quoted by Army Radio as saying the decision to strike came as a last resort after negotiations with the government failed.

"The prime minister surprised me with his willingness to advance negotiations, but Treasury officials have torpedoed every attempt to directly employ contractors," Eini said.
