Human rights group presses Syria to release info on fate of prisoners

Human rights group press

The American human rights organization Human Rights Watch called on Thursday for the Syrian government to reveal the fate of prisoners who participated in a prison riot near Damascus. It has been a year-and-a-half since the riot and, according to the human rights group, it is still not clear how many prisoners were killed, nor is the fate of other prisoners who participated in the riot that was stamped out by Syrian police known. According to contradictory information released at the time of the event, during suppression of the prison riot between nine and 25 prisoners were killed, as well as one police officer. However, according to Human Rights Watch, 42 families of prisoners have subsequently come forward saying they do not know the status of their relatives in prison.
