Hunger striker calls off protest, after failing to meet PM

After 34 days living off water and cigarettes, a social justice activist decided to call off his hunger strike outside the Prime Minister’s residence in Jerusalem on Wednesday, after he failed in his goal to convince Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu to meet with him to discuss Israel’s social issues.
Tamir Hijaj, 44, said Wednesday he called off the hunger strike due not only to prodding from his doctors and his two daughters, but also because “I realized very well that our prime minister doesn’t care about the public at all, and would prefer that I die rather than meet with me. So I chose to stay alive and continue to fight in order to change our society and bring a better society to Israel.”
On Wednesday night Hijaj posted a picture on his Facebook wall, eating a bowl of chicken noodle soup, and vowing to carry on his protest if a different fashion after he recovers.
