Hurricane Tomas heads toward Haiti

MIAMI — Tomas on Friday reached hurricane strength in the Caribbean as it headed toward earthquake-ravaged Haiti.
The hurricane's maximum sustained winds early Friday were near 80 mph (130 kph). The US National Hurricane Center in Miami said some additional strengthening is expected.
Hurricane Tomas was located about 175 miles (280 kilometers) west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and moving northeast near 9 mph (15 kph).
The storm was expected to cross over Haiti's southwestern tip then swirl through the strait that divides Haiti from Cuba.
