Iceland formally recognizes Palestinian state

Iceland formally recognized the Palestinian territories as an independent state at a ceremony in Reykjavik, AFP reported Thursday.
"It's significant because (Iceland) belongs to Europe and it's very important that this might create a very positive atmosphere for others to follow suit," PA Foreign Minister Riad Malki said in an interview with AFP.
The move comes just two weeks after Iceland's parliament voted in favor of recognizing Palestine, becoming the first Western European country to do so according Iceland's foreign minister.
