IDF begins removal of concrete barriers surrounding Gilo

IDF forces began removing the protective barriers surrounding the Jerusalem neighborhood of Gilo on Sunday.

The wall, comprising 800 large concrete sections, has served to protect the community from gunfire directed at the residents' buildings by Palestinian terrorists operating out of the nearby Bethlehem suburb of Beit Jala for the past decade.

Eighty of the large concrete sections of the defensive barrier will be removed on Sunday, while the remaining 720 pieces will be taken away over the next few weeks by army engineers.

"The wall was built as at the time of [Operation] Defensive Shield, and at the moment we don't see any problem with removing it. Should the need arise, we can erect the wall anew," said Lt. Col. Hazi Revivo, deputy commander of Central Command's army engineers.
