IDF chief rabbi recommends that IAF rabbi be fired

IDF Chief Rabbi Brig.-Gen. Rafi Peretz recommended that military rabbi Moshe Raavad be dismissed for his criticism of the IDF decision to obligate religious soldiers to attend military ceremonies and listen to female singers.

Peretz said that Raavad overstepped his authority and that his conduct was not suitable for an IDF officer. Peretz met with Israel Air Force (IAF) commander Maj.-Gen. Ido Nehushtan and recommended that Raavad, who serves as the IAF’s rabbi, be dismissed from his position.

On Tuesday, Raavad resigned from the "Shahar" program, aimed at integrating haredi men into military units in which they can continue to maintain their ultra-Orthodox lifestyle.

Raavad was unhappy with Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz's announcement on Monday that religious soldiers would be obligated to remain in military ceremonies even if they will need to listen to a female singer’s performance. Gantz did rule that religious soldiers could receive exemptions from attending performances at private unit events.
