Iranians begin rallies marking 1979 revolution

Iran's state TV on Thursday showed thousands of pro-government demonstrators rallying to mark the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Theopposition has vowed to stage counter demonstrations, but eye-witnessessay police have deployed hundreds of forces in central Teheran toconfront them.

Opposition members went on roof tops lateWednesday and shouted "God is greatest" in protest — echoing similarcries after the disputed June election as well as anti-shah protestsmore than three decades ago.
