Iraq PM arrives in Teheran to cement ties

TEHERAN, Iran — Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was visiting Iran on Monday, to cement ties with the Shi'ite powerhouse ally as he struggles to secure a second term in office.
Iranian state TV showed Maliki being greeted by Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki after landing at the Teheran airport on Monday morning.
Maliki is trying to remain in power in Iraq after his Shi'ite alliance narrowly lost the March 7 elections to a rival's Sunni-backed bloc, which Jordan and other Sunni Arab states have supported.
Maliki met with Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman before heading to Teheran but the Jordanian monarch withheld public endorsement for the Iraqi leader's bid.
