IRNA, UN Watch: Iran elected deputy of arms conference

Iran's official news agency IRNA announced on Saturday that Iran had been elected as a representative of the Asian working group and deputy head of the UN Arms Trade Treaty Conference earlier in the week.

The conference, which started last week, is a month-long effort to put together the first-ever binding multilateral treaty regulating the world's massive arms trade.

The Geneva-based human rights group UN Watch responded on Sunday calling for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to reject and condemn Iran's selection for a key role as part of the conference.

Although Iran's selection has not yet been formally published according to UN Watch, video footage of the Conference clearly confirms IRNA's claims that Iran was selected for key roles.

UN Watch characterized Iran's selection as a state which will influence and model the direction of the arms treaty as hypocritical in light of all of the recent accusations that Iran is importing arms to Syria in violation of the UN Security Council's arms ban.
