Israel says peace treaty with Egypt is a strategic asset

Israel emphasized on Friday that the peace treaty with Egypt clearly states that the Sinai peninsula is sovereign Egyptian territory, and that the peace accords in place since 1979 are a strategic asset for the two countries, Israel Radio quoted officials as saying.
Officials were responding to comments from the Egyptian ambassador to the Palestinian Territories Yasser Othman, who said earlier in the day that Israel has increased its rhetoric about lawlessness in Sinai and subsequent terror threats to the Jewish State in order to create a pretext for recapturing Sinai.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr - who was meeting with top US officials in Washington on Friday - continued to insist that the security situation in Sinai is stable, and that the Egyptian army is "determined" to root out those seeking to stir up problems, Israel Radio said.
