Israel to allow extended detention for migrants

A Sunday decision by the Population and Immigration Authority will allow Israeli authorities to detain migrants crossing into Israel from Egypt for extensive periods of time, Israel Radio reported.
The decision came following discussions between the Authority and the defense establishment.
Earlier in the year, the Knesset passed the Law to Prevent Infiltration, which allows the state to keep immigrants in prison much longer, and has stricter guidelines for releasing them from prison. In addition, the law establishes a system for supervising the illegal immigrants’ deportation.
The Law to Prevent Infiltration will be in effect for three years, after which the government will examine its influence on illegal immigration into Israel.
