Israel welcomes South Sudan as new member of UN

Israel welcomed South Sudan into the brotherhood of nations on Thursday at a special event held in honor of the new member state at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Israeli ambassador to the UN Ron Prosor told South Sudan's Vice President Dr. Riek Machar Teny that the Jewish State embraced his country which declared independence from Sudan last Saturday
"We welcome the 193rd state to the United Nations," he said shaking Teny's hand. "The State of Israel and people of Israel salute your courage and wish you peace and prosperity on your new journey. Israel will stand beside you and extend its hand in cooperation with your new nation."
Teny said he was appreciative of Israel's pledge and would act to strengthen ties between the two nations over the coming years.
