Israeli jurist chosen to serve on UN human rights body

Following an intensive diplomatic campaign by Israel's UN mission over the course of a year, 112 member states on Thursday elected Prof. Yuval Shany, 43, to serve on the UN Human Rights Committee.
It was the second time that an Israeli jurist has been chosen for the prestigious post; Prof. David Kretzmer was elected in 1995. Shany, 43, is dean of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Faculty of Law.
"The election of Prof. Shany, an internationally renowned Israeli jurist, is an achievement for the UN mission and a reason for national pride," said Israel¹s Ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor.
