Israeli sentenced to community work for traveling to Iran

The Beersheba District Court sentenced a 48-year-old resident of Ashdod to four months of community service for traveling to Iran, in contravention of a law forbidding Israeli citizens to travel to enemy states.

The man, an immigrant of Iranian descent, wanted to travel to the city where he was born to sell some assets he had there. He was afraid the Iranian government would nationalize his property unless he sold it first.

He traveled to Turkey in late 2008, where he managed to obtain a fake Iranian identity card. He then entered Iran and conducted negotiations to sell his assets with local business people.

But Iranian intelligence agencies found out he was an Israeli and detained him for long interrogations where they tried to milk him for information on Israel and the IDF.He was only released when the Iranians he was not in possession of any information that was of value to them.

He was captured back in Israel by the police in cooperation with Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) and was indicted. Apart from community service, the man was also fined NIS 2000.
