Israelis, Jordanians complete oil spill cleanup exercise

A joint Israeli-Jordanian exercise to combat an oil spill in the Gulf of Eilat/Aqaba was completed successfully last week. The operation simulated a 100 ton oil leak into the sea from a tanker anchored in Aqaba Port. The Jordanians turned to the Environmental Protection Ministry Marine and Coastal Division for assistance as part of the exercise.
Oil containment booms from the two countries were joined to create a single Jordanian-Israeli boom, aimed at improving treatment and control of the oil spill. Vessels hailing from the two countries operated oil containment, pumping and storage systems.
The exercise was part of a training program run by the ministry within the framework of the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan.
